Gianpaolo Pagni is a visual artist. Born in Turin, he lives and works in Paris. His work focuses on memory and keeping track, using patterns and repetition to excavate an archeology that is both personal and collective, notably through the reappropriation of printed objects, such as medication instructions, old school books and notebooks, Panini albums… In connection with the notion of memory, since 2000, he has been developing a particular and personal drawing style: he creates rubber stamps which he uses as genuine drawing tools. His practice also extends to painting, installations, sound and editing. He has been collaborating with many prestigious brands, including Hermès, Diptyque, Pierre Hermé and Viabizzuno. His works have been shown in exhibitions in France and abroad.

Gianpaolo Pagni likes to preserve, classify and tidy up. Here he extracted from archives notebooks of his middle school mathematics, when he was 12 years old in Turin, Italy. Today in his artist studio, after more than 40 years, he finally decided to start reviewing his lessons, but this time not in writing numbers and equations but covering pages with stamp drawings. Now on these pages two lives coexist: that of an adolescent conscientiously doing exercises and that of a visual artist ultimately interested in memory, imprint, shapes, colors and signs.

This book presents a selection of stamp drawings taken from the MATEMATICA FLASH 1 and 2 series. All stamps used for these designs were designed and manufactured by Gianpaolo Pagni, thus transforming them into genuine drawing tools.
